What is a Brass Service exactly?

Unfortunately comparing services form different  techs can be confusing like comparing mobile phone plans. All Brass & Woodwind Repairs Brass Playing Condition Service comprises of the following:

 

  • The instrument body, pistons/rotors, slides, valve caps etc are all inspected.

  • Frozen slides or valves are carefully dealt with.

  • All valves are handlapped & cleaned.

  • All slides are checked for alignment & lapped & cleaned as necessary.

  • Chemical cleaning of all parts is then conducted.

  • All internal tubing is scrubbed washed & thoroughly rinsed.

  • All pistons & slides are polished, degreased & thoroughly rinsed & dried.

  • Your mouthpiece is checked & rectified for trueness.

  • Silverplated instruments are also usually buffed /polished.

  • Once all parts are completely satisfactorily cleaned & all fit correctly, the instrument is then lubricated & assembled.

  • A play test is then conducted & any nuances are corrected. 

 

The instrument is then left to rest & re-checked the following day. Once completely satisfied with the end result, the custiomer is contaced immediateley to arrange pick up.

What is a Woodwind Service exactly?

Unfortunately comparing services form different techs can be confusing like comparing mobile phone plans. All Brass & Woodwind Repairs Woodwind Playing Condition Service comprises of the following:

 

  • The instrument body, keywork & pads are inspected, then stripped down.

  • All parts are cleaned & or polished.

  • Each key is worked on individually & necessary action taken to rectify any issues such as cup levelling, re-padding, re-corking, excessive play etc.

  • Once satisfied, work on the next key begins until all keywork is completed.

  • The instrument is then regulated making sure that all the mechanisms work together as intended & small nuances are corrected.

  • The instrument is then play tested.

  • Your mouthpiece is also checked.

 

The instrument is then left to rest & re-checked the following day. Once completely satisfied with the end result, the customer is contacted immediateley to arrange pick up.

How much will it cost?

Typically in a nutshell the services described above usually fall between $150 - $350 + GST.

 

There are many variables which will affect cost or savings on a service. Customers are urged to supply as much information as possible or better still  -come in for an inspection for more specific estimates.

What if I only want one thing done?

Sure. However preferably your instrument should ideally be inspected so that you can be informed on whatever known or unknown issues have been found & what choices of servicing may be open to you for that particular instrument. Your decision is respected & only work you want done carried out.

Is my instrument worth servicing?

First we have to establish what brand, model & age your instrument is & what your intentions may be. Your instrument may be deemed worthy or not upon receiving the above information. In many cases an inspection may be paramount to deciding what course of action to take.
